A multidisciplinary oceanography course for MSc students organized by the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Texel). The course has a comprehensive programme covering all main disciplines of oceanography: physics – chemistry – biology – geology. See the Poster for information. The entry procedure is open from 1 November 2010 onwards. The course is open to students from Dutch universities with a Bachelors degree in studies related to oceanography. The capacity is limited to 21 external students. Entries by students in the first or second year of their Masters will be given priority. Dutch research institutes 'FOKUZ' on cooperation in fundamental marine research. In the Netherlands, the two fundamental marine research institutes, NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and the Centre of Estuarine and Marine Ecology of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-CEME), have decided to join forces in 'FOKUZ' to further strengthen their already prominent international positions in fundamental marine research. Within FOKUZ, ‘Fundamenteel Onderzoek Kust en Zee’ (Fundamental Research on Seas and Coasts), the two institutes will develop: 1. A joint research programme; the following topics have been identified: • The physics, biogeochemistry and ecology of small particles in the North Sea • Biogeochemical cycles of nutrients and other elements in relation to climate change and eutrofication • Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning 2. Sharing of expertise and facilities: four research vessels, among which the Dutch national research vessel R.V. Pelagia, belong to the two institutes 3. Training: FOKUZ will develop a marine MSc curriculum in cooperation with Dutch Universities, and intends to play a major role in the training of marine scientists in the Netherlands 4. Representation at national and international level in the Programme Board of Marine and Coastal Research ZKO of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation, the European Network of Marine Research Institutes and Stations (MARS), the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO), and the Census of Marine Life (CoML). 'Hoe werkt de Zee?' FOKUZ werkt aan antwoorden op deze basale maar voor onze planeet cruciale vraag. FOKUZ staat voor Fundamenteel Onderzoek KUst en Zee en is een samenwerkingsverband van het NIOZ Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Zeeonderzoek van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), en het Centrum voor Estuariene en Mariene Ecologie van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen (NIOO-KNAW/CEME). Hiermee willen de instituten hun huidige vooraanstaande internationale posities nog verder versterken. Binnen FOKUZ, 'Fundamenteel Onderzoek Kust en Zee' zullen de instituten het volgende ontwikkelen: 1. een gemeenschappelijk onderzoeksprogramma. In eerste instantie zullen de onderzoekers zich hierbij richten op: • De fysica, biogeochemie en ecologie van slib (silt en kleideeltjes) in de Noordzee. • Biogeochemische cycli van voedingsstoffen (N, P en Si) en andere elementen in relatie tot klimaatverandering en eutrofiëring. • Het belang van biodiversiteit voor het functioneren van ecosystemen. 2. het onderling delen van kennis en faciliteiten: de twee instituten beschikken samen over een vloot van vier onderzoeksschepen, waaronder het nationale oceaanonderzoeksschip 'Pelagia'. 3. onderwijs: FOKUZ wil een belangrijke rol spelen in de opleiding van jonge zeeonderzoekers en heeft daartoe in samenwerking met vier Nederlandse universiteiten (Utrecht, Groningen en beide Amsterdamse universiteiten) een marien master's curriculum ontwikkeld. Volgend jaar juni zal de eerste zeegaande cursus worden gegeven. 4. vertegenwoordiging: zowel op nationaal als op internationaal niveau zullen de instituten gemeenschappelijk optreden. Voorbeelden van groepen waarin FOKUZ participeert, zijn de programmaraad van het programma Zee en Kustonderzoek (ZKO) van NWO, de Marine Board van de European Science Foundation, het European Network of Marine Research Institutes and Stations (MARS), het Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) en de Census of Marine Life (CoML).
